Just a Mosquito Bite, or Something Worse?
With summer upon us, unfortunately, pesky mosquitoes come with the beautiful weather and fun. For many of us, mosquito bites are an inconvenience that doesn’t alter our lives. If we can resist the urge to itch and scratch, the bite goes away on its own. But for some, mosquito bites are much more miserable and intense. These strong and lasting reactions can be referred to as “Skeeter Syndrome.”
Skeeter Syndrome vs. Normal Bite
How can you tell if your mosquito bite is suffering from Skeeter Syndrome?
According to Allergychoices’ Pharmacist Maci Sprosty, PharmD, “Most people who are bitten by mosquitos are going to react with a local allergic response. The severity of symptoms is going to be the indicator of a typical reaction versus someone with skeeter syndrome. Someone with skeeter syndrome is going to have an exaggerated or severe reaction.”
Symptoms can be:
- Bruising near bite
- Inflamed, larger than a quarter
- Hives
- Fever and headache
How to Protect Yourself
Remove Mosquito Habitats
- Keep swimming pool water treated and circulating
- Empty or change the water in bird baths, fountains, rain barrels, and potted plant trays
- Eliminate standing water around your property where mosquitos can breed
Use Appropriate Barriers and Pesticides
- Contact local mosquito service to prevent breeding
- Cover all gaps in walls, doors, and windows
- Make sure windows and door screens are in good working order
Avoid Getting Bit
- Keep mosquitoes away from exposed skin by wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and socks
- Stay indoors when possible, especially during the evening and night
- Replace lights with “bug lights” to attract fewer mosquitoes
Is Immunotherapy an Option for Skeeter Syndrome?
The answer is yes! According to Michael B. Kachel, RPh, Allergychoices’ Director of Pharmacy, “Allergy drops are an option for treating skeeter syndrome when it’s a true allergy. Patients can get tested to verify that a mosquito allergy is the culprit.”
